The Chocolate Series by David Antonio Cruz was created between 2011 - 2015 as a response to the backlash of immigration in the United States and the invisibility of black and brown bodies in the wider discourse. In this series, Cruz crosses disciplines and mediums with his use of painting, sculpture, objects and costume-making to create a three-dimensional surface and fade the lines between sculpture and painting. A large body of this series was featured in the Portraiture Now: Staging the Self exhibition that toured throughout the United States by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery from 2014-2016.
